He was a musician, married to Dionne Warwick, and had done some TV, but he is not much of an actor. William Elliott plays the lead, the only time he did so. were reluctant to release it, as they were. It is unclear what went wrong, but I can understand that Warner Bros. It is just that he does not seem to be able to deal with the actors. There are also some good action sequences and shootouts, where framing, camera placement and body movement works well, and where Hathaway shows that he can still direct. It sounds like if it was by Lalo Schifrin, but it is by Tony Camillo.

The best thing about the film is the music. She is already a drug addict and a prostitute when they meet, but it is the latter part that Ramsey cannot handle. He is working on a case to capture the local drug king and it is while working he meets the woman in question. There is no vigilante group involved, only the police, and while the main character Ken Ramsey is black, he is not strictly speaking a policeman but an undercover detective. The film follows a black policeman seeking revenge on the man who got his girlfriend addicted to heroin." It turns out that neither of these things are exactly correct. In the plot summary of the film on Wikipedia it says that "The film falls in the blaxploitation subgenre of 'vigilante group cleans up ghetto streets'. (Hathaway has been a project for me for several years now.) It has never been available for home viewing as far as I know, and I had given up on being able to watch it, but it finally, miraculously, made itself available. Such was Henry Hathaway's view of his last film, Hangup (1974), which was released as Super Dude. I may not like the film as much now as I did then, but it is fun and very accomplished. The cinematographer is one of Australia's most distinguished, John Seale, who has shot several films by Peter Weir, George Miller (including Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)), Anthony Minghella and John Boorman. The actors are good and affectionate and it is well-shot and edited. I think BMX Bandits would do well with teenagers today as well. (She says to one of the guys, who also has fallen into the grave, "You're nice." and he responds, "Nice! Who wants to be nice? I want to be sexy.") There are several scenes in BMX Bandits that flirts with horror and Oxploitation, like a scene where the three teens are chased through a graveyard by two goons in scary masks, and Kidman falls down into an open grave. (For your sake, I hope so.) Trenchard-Smith's niche is otherwise Ozploitation films and I suppose that is what Tarantino likes, but I have not seen any of them, and I do not feel tempted either. I have also seen Tyrannosaurus Azteca (2007), but I mean, who has not? Or maybe I am the only one. Some episodes of Five Mile Creek (1983-1985) and Mission: Impossible (1989), as well as his first film The Man from Hong Kong (1975), famous for being one of the films George Lazenby did after having played James Bond.

Besides BMX Bandits, I have not seen much of his work. Trenchard-Smith has a long and varied career, and (according to Entertainment Weekly) he is one of Quentin Tarantino's favourite directors, whatever that means. But it was a success in Australia, and got several AACTA nominations (the Australian equivalent of the Academy Awards), including for screenplay, editing and sound.

The director is Brian Trenchard-Smith, who claims he wanted to "capture the spirit of the Ealing comedies" when making BMX Bandits, but this is not obvious.
